Night Workers Assessment
Health assessments under the Working Time Regulations 1998
Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, employers must offer a free health assessment to anyone about to start working at night, and to all night workers on a regular basis thereafter. Night time is defined as the period between 11:00 pm and 6:00 am — a night worker regularly works at least 3 hours of their daily working time in this window.
Our approach combines a simple questionnaire (the minimum legal requirement) with full medical assessment by an OH physician for anyone disclosing health concerns.
What we do
- Confidential questionnaire issued to all night workers
- Triage of any reported health concerns
- Full medical assessment by an OH physician where indicated
- Recommendations on shift suitability and reasonable adjustments
- Statutory record of assessment maintained on your behalf
Conditions affected by night work
Several health conditions can be exacerbated by regular night working and warrant medical review:
- Diabetes
- Heart disease and cardiovascular conditions
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Mental health conditions
Who it's for
Employers running shift patterns covering 23:00–06:00 — including logistics and warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, security, transport and emergency services.
