FAQs for Drivers

Thousands of drivers apply for a HGV licence or taxi licence every year. In this post we answer the commonest questions we get asked by drivers:

What is a HGV/taxi driver medical?

There are legal requirements for the medical health of commercial drivers, and a medical consultation is standard for all Lorry, Taxi, and Ambulance drivers. The physician who conducts your medical exam will be assessing your fitness to drive these types of vehicles. The DVLA enforces these requirements: https://www.gov.uk/transport/driving-and-medical-conditions

What to expect in a HGV/taxi medical?

The medicals occur at our clinic in Hall Road Clinic, Aveley, RM154HD. This is a 5 minute drive from the M25/A13 junction. Parking is free on the road outside. Please see reception and take a seat in the waiting room. The doctor will call you to the clinic room and go through the consultation; the process takes around 15 minutes and includes a physical assessment and visual check. The D4 form will be filled out during this time and you will be handed it back to post, alongside the D2 and any other relevant documentation.

How much is a medical?

The current price is £55 (we do not charge VAT). We take payment at booking.

How often does a HGV/taxi driver need a medical?

Every new driver must undergo a medical examination prior to being granted a licence. Existing drivers are required by the DVLA to have a medical test at 45 years old, then every 5 years until 65, after which it is required annually.

Why do people fail their driver medicals?

Drivers are expected to be in reasonably good health and there are several reasons why someone might fail their medical. The commonest reasons are a high blood pressure and poor long distance vision. Both of these issues can be corrected in a relatively short time frame and so do not prevent someone from becoming a commercial driver long term. The doctor undertaking your medical will let you know if you fail and how to correct any concerns identified.

Who can do a HGV/taxi medical?

Any fully UK licensed doctor can undertake this medical. Your local GP may offer it, as well as private companies such as OccHealthNet. NHS GPs are likely to charge significantly more than dedicated companies such as ourselves, and the wait time is likely to be longer- we can usually see you within 1 week. We do these types of medicals every day, and are experienced in conducting them, completing the paperwork and providing guidance. This may be a different experience to an NHS appointment.
